Nyungne Retreat - A Buddhist practice of fasting and purification

Saturday, April 19

Join us as we engage in the powerful purification practice of Nyungne. This special purification practice emphasizes compassion for all living beings.

During this retreat, we will practice fasting, making prostrations (bowing), and offer chanted prayers to Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. This practice is a powerful way to purify negativity, pacify strong delusions, receive blessings, and increase our love, compassion, and Bodhichitta.

Important Information

During the day of fasting, we will fast for 24 hours, beginning with taking the 8 Mahayana Precepts. During this time of time, we maintain the fast with only a simple meal at lunch; however you can drink water, juice, tea, etc. throughout the 24 hour period.

The day of fasting begins with the 6:30am Mahayana Precepts practice, which makes our fasting a fully qualified spiritual practice. To receive the fullest benefit from this auspicious day, starting with the precepts is ideal.

When we take the 8 Mahayana Precepts, we promise to abstain for 24 hours from 8 actions:

1. Killing
2. Stealing
3. Sexual activity
4. Lying
5. Taking intoxicants
6. Eating after lunch (meaning we only eat lunch.)
7. Sitting on high or luxurious thrones or seats
8. Wearing ornaments, perfume, singing and dancing, etc.

Due to the fasting and vows, this is considered an Intermediate Level Retreat. Everyone is welcome to attend.
